Computing Zone

INTENT
At Holy Cross we believe that children need to be equipped with the skills and creativity to change the world. To be active participants in a digital world they need to be digitally literate on a range of systems. Our children need to be equipped to recognise and overcome the challenges of the modern, digital world and become active citizens for change. Not only do we want them to be digitally literate and competent end-users of technology but through our computing curriculum we want the children to develop creativity, resilience and problem-solving and critical thinking skills. 
 
 
IMPLEMENTATION

  • A clear and effective, bespoke curriculum that provides coverage in line with the National Curriculum is in place. 

  • Teaching and learning facilitates progression across all key stages within the strands of digital literacy, information technology and computer science

  • Children have access to the high quality hardware (laptop, Chromebook, iPad, programmable equipment) and software that they need to develop knowledge and skills of digital systems and their applications

  • Digital literacy is planned to be part of each Computing unit. This is based upon the 8 strands in ‘Education in a Connected World’. We use the Project Evolve resources as part of the planned curriculum. 

  • Key experiences are planned for as part of ‘11 before 11’ to enhance and develop the children’s wider experiences of Computing

  • Links have been made with the local University to enhance the learning experiences offered to the children. 

  • Children’s prior learning will be built upon and developed through each lesson and sequence of work. This assessment knowledge will be used in the next Computing unit and also through opportunities to apply their knowledge in lessons where they use technology to support learning.

IMPACT

Children have a clear understanding of the risks, benefits and challenges of digital literacy. They are able to articulate ways to stay safe online and also describe the risks and challenges of the online world. Parents are supported to support their children. 

We encourage our children to enjoy and value the curriculum we deliver. We will constantly ask the why behind their learning and not just the how. Children are able  to discuss, reflect and appreciate the impact computing has on their learning, development and well being. 

Finding the right balance with technology is key to an effective education and a healthy lifestyle. We feel the way we implement computing helps children realise the need for the right balance and one they can continue to build on in their next stage of education and beyond. We encourage regular discussions between staff and pupils to best embed and understand this. The way pupils showcase, share, celebrate and publish their work will best show the impact of our Computing curriculum.

 
Computing Overview
